Mechanisms for the controlled flow of irregular migrants across the common border are agreed


Meeting today with their respective delegations in Metetí, Darien province, the Foreign Ministers of Panama, Erika Mouynes, and of Colombia, Marta Lucía Ramírez, agreed on the urgent preparation of a work plan that seeks effective collaboration for safe passage and ordering of irregular migrants waiting to cross the common border.

The work plan establishes a quota for the flow of migrants, which corresponds to the care capacity of the reception centers in Panamanian territory and communicate their movement in a timely manner.

The Panamanian delegation reiterated the request that the exchange of information be periodic and accurate, that a system of lists and statistics be implemented and that biometric identification measures be established, also complying with biosafety measures.

Next Monday, these binational efforts will continue in Colombia to determine the details for the establishment of the quota, the logistics of the passage, with points of departure and reception of migrants, and a coordinated strategy against organized crime and human trafficking. related to this irregular traffic.

Before the work meeting, Foreign Minister Mouynes invited the Colombian delegation to take a tour of the San Vicente Migrant Reception Station, one of the three existing in that eastern Panamanian province.
