CHANCELLOR TEWANEY PARTICIPATED IN THE OPENING OF THE L ANNUAL COORDINATION MEETING OF THE IOM REGIONAL POLITICAL COMMITTEE

On February 28, the Government of Panama welcomed the decision of the IOM to establish a Regional Office in our country, as a meeting point for the convergence and strengthening of relations with the Member States of the Organization, starting from July 1, 2024


Foreign Minister Janaina Tewaney Mencomo participated in the opening of the 1st Annual Coordination Meeting of the Regional Political Committee of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which included the participation of the Director General of the IOM, Amy Pope.

During her speech, Chancellor Tewaney highlighted the importance of continuing to join forces to guarantee safe, orderly, regular and dignified immigration management in our country, because it has become one of the main migration routes in the world.

“It is important to note that Panama has been directly affected, in the sense that there is a humanitarian and environmental crisis, in that specific Darién step,” he added.

In this sense, the head of Panamanian diplomacy reiterated that our country has been energetic in communicating to the world that the Darién jungle is not a route, but rather a lung of biodiversity shared with Colombia and the region, which requires an articulated response. between several states.

Finally, the chancellor emphasized that Panama will continue to be committed to supporting organizations (such as the IOM), which have promoted Human Rights with each migrant; as well as coordination with the South and the North, to continue addressing migration in an organized manner.
