President Cortizo delivers 300 houses for more than 1,300 inhabitants of Gardí Sugdub Island

The residents will settle in the Nuevo Cartí urbanization on the mainland, in a safer area and with amenities such as water, electricity, parks, among other facilities. President Cortizo Cohen called on developed countries to cooperate in the emission of clean energy to alleviate the climate crisis affecting the world.


In a historic event, the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo Cohen, delivered 300 homes in the Nuevo Cartí Urbanization, in the district of Narganá, Guna Yala Region, in which 1,351 inhabitants will be resettled and will be transferred to the mainland from Gardí Island. Sugdub faces its progressive sinking due to rising sea levels as a result of climate change.

The President of the Republic declared to the national and international press that the displacement of the inhabitants of the Gardí Sugdub island to the mainland has an important meaning for Panama while calling on developed countries to address the climate crisis that affects the world and the poorest countries.

"Although Panama is one of the seven carbon negative countries, it makes this effort and we would like developed countries to do so as well, which in the end, with the emission of greenhouse gases, have caused the climate crisis that we are experiencing" , he emphasized. 

"We have a natural lung here in Darién, just like in the Amazon, but what are developed countries doing to move from the production of dirty energy to clean energy... they have to do their job," the president emphasized.

Regarding the Paris Agreement, the President of the Republic sent a message for it to be fulfilled, since there are several countries that are not doing so.

Cortizo Cohen pointed out that. Despite budget limitations, Panama is making an effort to address this climate crisis. 
The new ones have a 300-meter plot of land, an aqueduct system, electricity, a park with a basketball court, and three other neighborhood parks with children's play areas, becoming a new opportunity for life and development for the residents.
