Panama's election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council is a triumph of foreign policy

After exhausting work on Panamanian foreign policy, led by the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo Cohen, Panama was elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the period 2025-2026, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Janaina Tewaney Mencomo.

Foreign Minister Tewaney highlighted that “today is a very important day for Panama” and for foreign policy, led by President Cortizo Cohen by obtaining 183 of 190 votes to occupy a non-permanent position on the United Nations Security Council, in the elections held today at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.

Panama will assume, as of January 1, 2025, a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the sixth time with the highest percentage of votes obtained in the five times it has been a member.

The Security Council is the body that has the fundamental responsibility of maintaining international peace and security.

Chancellor Tewaney also thanked the team of the Permanent Mission of Panama to the United Nations, the Panamanian diplomatic corps and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their work, especially the Directorate of International Organizations and Conferences.

In addition, he thanked the support received from the Member States that supported our candidacy and placed this vote of confidence in Panama.

Panama extends its congratulations to Denmark, Pakistan, Greece and Somalia, States that were also elected today and hopes to work constructively in the United Nations Security Council for the 2025-2026 period.
