Panama reaffirms its commitment to population and development policies in the Second Report on Progress in the Implementation of the Montevideo Consensus

The Second National Report of the Montevideo Consensus, prepared by MIDES, the Technical Secretariat of the Social Cabinet (STGS), civil society and other institutions, includes 98 follow-up measures on nine priority topics, such as women, children, adolescence, youth, older people and indigenous peoples, among others.


In its effort to combat poverty and inequality, Panama has presented its Second National Report on Progress in the Implementation of the Montevideo Consensus, highlighting the actions and strategies aimed at promoting the inclusion and sustainable development of the population.

 

The report, which was presented in Panama by the Minister of Social Development (MIDES) and technical coordinator of the Social Cabinet, María Inés Castillo, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), aims to contribute to the exchange of ideas, dialogue and the formation of regional alliances. In addition, it seeks to serve as an analysis tool to facilitate the design of programs and the coordination of efforts aimed at improving the conditions of well-being and equity of the population.

Key Actions

Minister Castillo explained that this report details the actions carried out during the administration of President Laurentino Cortizo Cohen, focused on developing precise measurement instruments that support policies, programs and interventions with a multidimensional approach.

 

Policies to Combat Poverty and Inequality
– The Government Strategic Plan 2019-2024: Implementation of strategic lines to combat poverty and inequality.

– National Strategy Plan Colmena: the State Strategy in the Fight against Poverty and Inequality, which promotes social inclusion based on human rights, gender perspective and interculturality.

 

Social Inclusion
– National Council for Gender Parity: Promotion of gender equality.

– Management System for Gender Equality

– Autonomy of SENADAP: Policies for equity and protection of Afro-Panamanians.

 

Early Childhood and Senior Services
– Increased investment in services for early childhood and older people.

– Strengthening the system of protection and access to justice for children and adolescents, as well as the National Care System and comprehensive care protocols for elderly people in a situation of dependency.
