President Cortizo Cohen visits the Generadora Gatún plant, which is 93% complete

Generadora Gatún, the largest power plant in the country and Central America based on natural gas, is estimated to begin operations in October 2024, generating 670MW The initial workforce of the project reached up to 75% of the labor force from Colon. It currently employs more than 2,100 workers, who are carrying out construction work, of which 53% are from the Atlantic coast.


The President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo Cohen, took a tour this morning of the Generadora Gatún project, the largest power plant in the country and Central America based on natural gas, whose construction phase is 93% complete with a majority of Colonense labor.

Accompanied by the Minister Counselor for the Facilitation of Private Investment, José Alejandro Rojas; the Secretary of Energy, Rosilena Lindo; the general manager of ETESA, Carlos Mosquera, and the governor of Colón, Irasema de Dale, president Cortizo Cohen received by the Generadora Gatún team, who offered a detailed presentation on environmental management, human resources, social impact and operation of the project, as well as a field tour of the plant.

It is estimated that Generadora Gatún, whose investment is B/.1,200 million, will begin operations in October of this same year, generating 670 MW and contributing to the decrease in the cost of electricity for the Panamanian population.

 A plant built by colonenses

The work currently employs more than 2,100 workers, who are carrying out the construction work, of which the majority are nationals and particularly from Colon, thus reflecting a firm commitment to the development of the province.

This visit was led by the CEO of Generadora Gatún, Esteban Barrientos, who indicated that the progress of the work is going according to plan and announced that in the near future the plant will begin the testing phase.

During this visit, Barrientos also highlighted the high social impact of Generadora Gatún, which has been felt in the province of Colón, with an investment of more than one million dollars in community and social development projects. These efforts have significantly benefited more than 42 thousand people in local communities, improving their quality of life and driving economic growth.

Once in operation, Generadora Gatún will provide efficiency, solidity and stability to Panama's energy matrix, positioning itself as a fundamental pillar for the country's energy future and contributing to the reduction of the cost of energy in the country.
